[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]A[/nectar_dropcap]t Shoe Orthodontics, we believe that there is no place in healthcare for pressure sales. This means that we want you to feel comfortable both in our office and with the orthodontic care that you’re receiving. That is why we think second opinions can be a good thing!
Why Second Opinions Matter
When you’re confident in the information and services that you provide, second opinions aren’t something to be afraid of. In fact, we think second opinions can be really valuable. Other than providing another perspective on your unique orthodontic needs, a second opinion can give you confidence and assurance in that treatment plan that you choose. Any doctor who pressures you into committing to your treatment plan on the spot probably doesn’t have your best interest in mind.
Reasons to Consider A Second Opinion
If you have reservations about your treatment, getting a second opinion could be the right decision for you or your child. Here are a few other reasons that people may seek out a second opinion in their orthodontic care.
It has been recommended that you have multiple teeth extracted before beginning orthodontic treatment
You have been told that veneers or dental implants would treat your condition better than orthodontics
You are unsure if the treatment recommended is necessary
You have concerns about your doctor
It has been recommended that you have jaw surgery
At Shoe Orthodontics, we support you if you want to get a second opinion on the treatment we’ve recommended. Similarly, we are happy to be a second opinion for you if you are receiving treatment elsewhere. We want every patient to feel fully confident and comfortable with their orthodontic care. Call us today to see if we can be a second opinion for you or your child’s orthodontic needs.
YWCA Hanover is one of our favorite charities to partner with.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y[/nectar_dropcap]WCA Hanover is one of our favorite nonprofits that we get to partner with, and for good reason. They do important work in the community and we are grateful to be a part of it anytime that we can. Their mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. They do this in several different ways.
Their facility provides a safe place for recreational and community events for teens and children. They host dozens of groups for meetings, sports practices, events, and celebrations. Their educational and advocacy programs range from support groups to community events including a teen leadership council, and an annual women’s conference. The YWCA Hanover Safe Home has provided services for victims of domestic violence, such as an abuse hotline, emergency, and transitional housing, therapy, legal advocacy, and much more. These vital resources protect children, women, and men from the tragic results of domestic abuse and violence, and educate the public on ways to end the cycle of violence.
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes
Most recently, we were proud to sponsor YWCA Hanover’s annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event. During the event, men are asked to walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes – LITERALLY! While the event was virtual this year, the cause is just as important – bringing awareness and sparking conversation about the long-lasting effects of sexual and domestic abuse in our community.
The impact of an event where men have to walk in women’s shoes is a public statement of listening, learning, allyship, and commitment. Most importantly, this event gets the community talking about sex and gender biases, gender identity, gender relations, and men's sexualized violence. All funds raised are used to help provide services for survivors of domestic violence.
We are proud to support this event and the continued work of YWCA Hanover. To find out how you can get involved, visit YWCA Hanover’s website here. To learn more about the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® campaign, click here.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]W[/nectar_dropcap]hen an adult is looking for shoes, there are a lot of different variables one has to think through. For what purpose am I buying them? Which size to I need? Which color? Which style? All of those questions have to be answered before a person says, “this is the pair of shoes I will buy.” A whole different set of questions arises when buying for a child. Most importantly, how long will these last before I have to buy a new pair of shoes. It may come as a surprise to you, but similar questions go into the decisions that we make for orthodontic treatment for adults and young people.
[divider line_type="No Line" custom_height="4"]
In order to create the best treatment plan possible, we have to treat adults and children differently.
[divider line_type="No Line" custom_height="30"]
This also means that for an adult, the bite pattern and whether the patient has an overbite or an underbite or even a structural malformation in the jaw means a much different treatment option. We also have to take into account that the adult has a bite that is set due to years of eating and wearing down the sharper edges of the teeth. With young people, we can correct with less attention paid to the bite because just like the way their teeth are now, they will settle and wear into a natural bite.
Another thing we look at in adults and contrast with children is the work does in the past. A lot of young people getting braces haven’t had a broken tooth, or an implant, or a bridge, or anything like that. We take those variables into account when coming up with a treatment plan.
As a result of all of these variables, there are also more treatment options available to the adult than the younger patients. Traditional braces are the most common treatment for young people -- it’s fast and effective, especially during their time of growth. For adults, we do traditional braces and clear aligners and ceramic braces at a different ratio than for young people (there is a clear aligner for teens, but we end up using traditional braces more frequently with them. Adults also have other reasons for choosing other treatment options related to their professional expectations and social experiences.
No matter what age range you are in, though, Shoe Orthodontics is your place to get the best smile possible. We would love to consult with you, choose the best treatment plan for you, and get you on the road to a great smile.

[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y [/nectar_dropcap]ou might be having an issue with being stuck at home and keeping your kids entertained. We have an idea! Instead of asking your kids to do things they aren't always interested in and trying to plan out their whole day, ask them to teach YOU how to do they love. Here are a few ideas that will help you get started!
1.) How To play a musical instrument
You've been paying for lessons. They have been taking tons of classes. Now is the time to ask them to teach you what they have learned! This is great for so many reasons! You'll get to spend time together creating a memory, it will make your kid feel super awesome to teach you something, and you'll appreciate their talent a lot more because playing an instrument is hard work!
2.) How to play their favorite video game
We know kids LOVE to play video games. Normally, we fight tooth and nail to get them off of the things. How about, just this once, you ask your kid to teach you to play their favorite video game. Make it more fun and place bets on how many times you'll lose - loser has to do the dishes.
3.) How to do a dance
Tik Tok is huge right now. We're sure you've heard of it. If you really want to blow your kid away, ask them to teach you how to do their favorite Tik Tok dance. 10 points if you can keep up and 20 bonus points if you show us the video.
4.) How to do something artistic
There are a lot of very talented young artists. If your child is one of them, ask them to teach you how to do some awesome art using their favorite medium.
5.) How to do that super weird thing
Not all talents are conventional ones and that's awesome! Ask your kid how to do that weird eyebrow dance thing, talk backwards, solving a rubiks cube super fast, cup stacking...this list is endless, and your kid can definitely teach you something super cool and strange from it.
We hope you guys give some of these a shot. Enjoy making memories with your kids during this time where we are forced to slow down. Let them teach you a thing or two and you might be surprised at just how talented they really are!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]I[/nectar_dropcap]t’s not unusual to sometimes break a wire, and it always seems to happen when you expect it the least. Fortunately, most common orthodontic problems don't have to be an emergency because you can make minor fixes at home! As always, a little dental wax can help to ease discomfort, but sometimes you still find yourself with a bigger issue.
Here are our super simple tips to help you remove your ties and wire– using tools you can get in the beauty section of your local store. This should help you make necessary minor fixes if you are unable to make it in to the office.
There's a reason we warn you about eating crunchy or sticky foods– a single bite of the wrong food can cause a lot of trouble! It's much easier to stick with foods you know are braces-friendly than to have to make a repair.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y[/nectar_dropcap]ou know we love giving back to our community, and one of the ways we like to do that is through our annual shoe drive to support YWCA-Hanover! This year, we hope to top all of our past efforts, but we need your help!
YWCA-Hanover supports local children and their families. “It was March of 1920 that the Girls Club of Hanover acted upon a motion to form the YWCA in Hanover.” These words were written in a history pamphlet for the YWCA’s 50th anniversary. Their programs have changed over time to respond to the needs of the community and have ranged from fitness programs for women, gymnastics for girls, dances and clubs for teenage girls, women’s clubs and classes, as well as the development of the now-essential domestic violence program we call Safe Home. Their childcare programs continue to be a large part of meeting their mission of empowering women and serving families.
Many of the YWCA-Hanover advocates are active within the community, presenting education programs to help prevent domestic violence. YWCA-Hanover has truly made a lasting difference in the lives of these people and in our community, and it’s our privilege to help however we can to support them.
Want to know how you can help?
Bring in your gently worn, used, and new shoes — all sizes are appreciated! The shoes will be provided to the children and their families of the Child Care Services and other YWCA-Hanover programs.
YWCA-Hanover also has an updated wish list of items that are most needed. So if you want to donate any of these items, you can drop them off at the office during our shoe drive, and we will make sure they are delivered! Bring your donations to our office during regular business hours from 12/10/19 - 1/31/20.
PLUS — All donations will receive an extra entry into our quarterly drawing for our patients! You don't want miss your chance to win a trip to Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]D[/nectar_dropcap]id you know that 26% of the households that receive food assistance have at least one member who has served or is currently serving in the military**? That means a quarter of the people experiencing food insecurity in our country are those who have sacrificed their time, talents, and health, and risked their lives in order to serve us. We think we owe it to these incredible men and women to support our community. That’s why we participate in the Military Share hosted by Roots for Boots! Roots for Boots is not only an incredible organization, but it is also so well-led, it’s hard to find the words to describe it. Christy Lucas has done an amazing job with Roots for Boots. She leads with vision, meticulous attention to detail, and compassion.
Meet Our Friends, John and Finn
Sometimes you find yourself in the right place at the right time. This was the case when Dr. Shoe had the honor of meeting a remarkable veteran named John at a recent Military Share. John is legally blind and was hoping to find a canine companion to share his life with. That's where Finn comes in — a lab mix that John just fell in love with.
Dr. Shoe wanted to make sure this dynamic duo had everything they needed to start their life together. So it was our privilege to provide a few services like a vet appointment and Service Dog Training through MCS Dog Training. We feel so humbled that we got to be a part of this journey and that we're able to give back this wonderful gentleman. We're so thankful for everything veterans have done (and continue to do) for our country.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]C[/nectar_dropcap]ommunity involvement and dental health education are two things that are SUPER important to us at Shoe Orthodontics. We make it a priority to be a truly valuable partner in the communities we serve. Since so many kids will eventually need some type of orthodontic care, we want to help them understand the ins and outs of treatment. With those two ideas in mind, we decided to partner with local schools to provide kids with a fun and educational experience for all ages!
Who Said School Presentations Have to Be Boring?!
Starting October 2019, you can schedule free, FUN presentation for your classroom. This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” kind of thing. We’ve created two different presentations: one for children in kindergarten and one for older kids who can get a little more hands-on.
K-Level Class Presentations
For kindergarten classes, we offer an easy-to-understand assembly program to teach kids about oral health. Kids are encouraged to participate and call out the answers with their classmates. Our goal is to help kids understand how to care for their teeth and gums from an early age — but we pack our presentations with dad jokes to keep them laughing.
Oral Healthcare for Grades 1-3
For older kids, we REALLY bring the fun. These presentations have a carnival-type feel — with 5-6 interactive education stations. Kids will play games and learn about orthodontic care from one of our team members. We even take a scan of a team member to show the kids what their teeth look like on a digital screen, and to show them how easy and painless the scans are.We also host these events at our office, so kiddos that are homeschooled or other small groups can learn about oral healthcare and orthodontics in a fun environment.Whatever presentation type you choose, every kid goes home with a goodie bag that we know they’ll love!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]W[/nectar_dropcap]e’ve caught the Toy Story 4 bug, and we are bringing it to Halloween in the Park! This event is a fundraiser held annually at Codorus State Park, sponsored by the Friends of Codorus State Park. We will be there Friday and Saturday, the 25-26th, ready to hand out candy to all of the trick or treaters that come to visit us! .
The price of admission is just a $15 donation per car. Not only will Halloween in the Park benefit one of our favorite local treasures, it will ALSO be loaded with tons of fun stuff for the whole family!
A 1.5 mile hayride
90+ campsites decorated and ready hand out candy!
Hayrides run from 6 pm - 10 pm and trick or treating will be from 6 pm - 8:30 pm only! To make things even more fun, everyone who takes a picture at our campsite and tags us on Facebook or Instagram will be entered to win a $150 Visa gift card! Whoever gets the most likes on their photo is the winner!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y[/nectar_dropcap]WCA Hanover, Safe Home is an amazing group that is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women in Hanover, PA. We’ve selected this group as the Shoe Orthodontics’ Spotlighted Charity of the Quarter because, well, we believe in what they’re doing. They have a huge impact on our community, and we want to support them.
So we really hope you’ll join us at our Fairy Tea Party at the Gettysburg Battlefield Bed and Breakfast on August 17, 2019, from 11-12:30.
Tickets are $25 per fairy (accompanying adults are free), and ALL proceeds will benefit YWCA Hanover, Safe Home and help them help more women in our community. Hurry and get your tickets here! Seats are limited.
Find Out How to Get a Beautiful Smile Using Virtual Consult
Shoe Orthodontics understands that choosing the orthodontist who will take care of you or your children is a big decision.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]T [/nectar_dropcap]here are a number of variables you will likely think through in choosing, but one of the biggest is whether or not you or someone you care for needs treatment. Would braces or Invisalign work for you?
We want to take some of the stress out of that decision by offering you a free, no-obligation, Virtual Consult with our office. In almost no time at all, you can complete the consultation directly from your phone — from anywhere! — and Dr. Shoe will look over your information and respond quickly with an assessment to let you know whether orthodontic treatment is right for you. If so, Dr. Shoe will also let you know what your best options are to get the smile you want.
This, of course, is the first step. The next step in your treatment is to come in for a thorough assessment, which includes pictures and x-rays for a highly specific and individual treatment plan. But it is our hope that the Virtual Consult will alleviate your initial concerns and fears and give you the information you need to take the next steps toward a beautiful smile.
In addition to your initial treatment assessment, we'll also send you information about the second most scary part of orthodontic treatment: paying for it. We want to make sure you get the care you need. And we know that providing the financing information upfront will give you a better, stress-free picture of what that will look like.
When you're ready to find out what your orthodontic options are, try a Virtual Consult today. We’ll help you decide what will work best for you!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]I[/nectar_dropcap]f you've been looking around online, trying to decide which orthodontist you want taking care of your teeth or those of your children, you have probably seen a banner that says something like "FREE CONSULTS."
We know you've run across this phrase because we provide free consultations, so we want to answer your questions and show you that it's not a ploy. We do it because we genuinely care about our community and you.
Why are consultations free?
At Shoe Orthodontics, we care about quality orthodontic care and treatments. We also care about you. We don't think you should have to pay to find out whether orthodontic care is something that would benefit you. We are happy to set your mind at ease by either telling you that treatments aren't necessary or by presenting you with a treatment plan that will improve your smile and bite. It's that simple.
If you are interested in a free consultation, the process is simple. First, fill out the form linked below. Once we have received your information, we will call you and schedule an appointment with you to come in for the free consult. When you come in for the consultation, one of our assistants will take some pictures and maybe visually inspect your teeth. At that point, they will tell you whether orthodontic treatment is right for you.
Do you have to go through with the treatment we recommend?
Of course not! You could even go to another orthodontist and do another free consult. It's entirely up to you, and we won't judge you for that. We would love to be your orthodontist and treat you, though! So we will be entirely up front with you in every little detail and present you with the best options that fit your specific orthodontic requirements and your budget.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]L[/nectar_dropcap]isten up everyone!
Today is a very special day! Today we celebrate Dr. Shoe's birthday!! He's 29 (again?)
What can we say about Dr. Shoe? Working with him is the absolute best. He genuinely cares about his team and actively gets our feedback on how we can continue to improve. He is a fantastic leader who pushes us each day to be the best that we can possibly be. Dr. Shoe is also hysterical and keeps us laughing at his corny jokes all day. He has a wonderful ability to put a positive spin on any situation.
He makes sure to engage patients at each visit, so they always know exactly where they are in the process and still allows them to ask questions. Dr. Shoe truly cares about each patient and consistently goes above and beyond to make sure that their experience is top notch.
For his birthday this year, we surprised him with a scavenger hunt around Gettysburg. We saved all of the most embarrassing challenges for him of course, including having him sing Christina Aguilera’s, "Genie in a Bottle" to a lovely lady dressed in period clothing.
Working with Dr. Shoe is always a good time. We're a lucky office to work on such a great team, with such an AMAZING leader.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]I[/nectar_dropcap]t's that time again.
Time to show our support for the people of our community who work so hard to do good for our neighbors. April's Charity of the Month is the Focus Foundation. The Focus Foundation supports individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual or Developmental Disorder (IDD) by helping them gain a sense of community and independence through volunteer work and community activities. More than 3.5 million Americans have ASD and the Center for Disease Control has estimated that ASD is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S. We at Shoe Orthodontics want to show our love and support to the ASD community by giving to the Focus Foundation as our Charity of the Month
Here's what we're doing and how you can help:
We are hosting a community yard sale as a fundraiser May 18th 8-2pm at 1191 Eichelberger Street, Hanover PA. The event is rain or shine. In order to do this, we're accepting donations to be used at the yard sale. You bring, we sell, and we will give the money to the Focus Foundation on behalf of the staff and patients at Shoe Orthodontics. Donations can be dropped off at our office Monday - Friday normal business hours. We will also have tie-dyed t-shirts and handmade earrings for sale at the yard sale. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Focus Foundation.
Earrings are being sold in the office$10 per pair, 100% of the money raised goes directly back to Focus Foundation!
It's a simple project, but one that will benefit a charity that supports children and adults with Autism along with the families who love and care for them.
It's Jenna's birthday! Today we are celebrating Jenna who works with us as the lead Smile Architect. Jenna thinks we're hilarious and, to be honest, we are, but we think she's pretty funny, too. She's got us nailed when she says we're like a second family - we totally are and we're so glad she's a part of it! She helps make everything awesome and we love working with her.
We want to celebrate her today. We're glad she was born and that she works with us. She makes every day a pretty great one and we hope that she has an amazing time and a great party for your birthday.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]W[/nectar_dropcap]e are so grateful to get to recognize the winner for our Leader of Change award entries.
We would like to recognize Tanisha Johnson and share the nomination written on her behalf by Valerie Reinburg, the mom of our patient, Ana Reinburg.
Nominating Tanisha Johnson for the Leader of Change Award, Valerie Reinburg writes, "Tanisha has been Ana's PCA and constant sidekick since kindergarten. She currently assists Ana in the 6th grade at CVIS. Tanisha helps Ana with all of the daily tasks that are too difficult for Ana to accomplish without assistance. She is in the classroom on a daily basis, and when she's not busy helping Ana, she helps out in the classroom in whatever capacity she's asked to. She is frequently seen on the playground, at Track on Field day, and accompanying Ana on the stage for concerts. She's even met with Ana's physical therapist so she can work with Ana at school to help her learn to climb stairs! She gets Ana on and off the van every day. Her smiling face is the first person Ana sees when she arrives at school every day. Tanisha is amazing, and no task is too big or small for her to accomplish! She brings a smile and a helping hand to all who know her. CVIS is a better school because of Tanisha's presence! We hope Tanisha will be with Ana right up through graduation!"
How could we not agree?! Thank you so much, Ana and Valerie, for speaking up to recognize such a valuable part of our community.
Congratulations, Tanisha Johnson, for being such an amazing Leader of Change!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]D[/nectar_dropcap]r. Shoe is now a provider of 3M™ Clarity Aligners!
Patients who are looking for an alternative to regular braces often choose a discreet clear aligner such as Invisalign or 3M clear aligners. 3M™ clear aligners are a great new product which will give both you and Dr. Shoe the control you want over your treatment options as well as the choices available for you to get the smile you want.
Clear aligners are a great option for a lot of patients. They aren’t as visible to friends and coworkers which is why we call them discreet. Almost no one will notice that you’re using them. They are also a more comfortable alternative to braces. You won’t have to come in and have a new set of wires put in. Instead, you’ll come in and we’ll create a new tray for you to put in and you’ll be on your way. This also makes clear aligners a more convenient alternative to braces. We think you’ll love them.
Why Should You Even Care?!
Simple. You now have more options than ever before to get the smile you always wanted. We're proud to provide both Invisalign and 3m Clarity Aligners. There are some pros and cons of each system, so be sure and talk to Dr. Shoe about what option is best for you!
3M™ Clarity Aligners are a great option, but they aren’t for all situations. We want to help you decide whether or not they are right for you. Schedule an appointment today to see Dr. Shoe who will walk you through your options and help you decide if 3M™ clear aligners are the right option for you.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]W[/nectar_dropcap]e have a feeling it's going to be a good day, because today is Emily's birthday, and we believe she's one of the best around. ?
Emily is one of our clinical assistants, and working with her is such a joy. She loves to see confidence grow in our patients, and that is evident in the way she interacts with everyone in our office.
Emily has also recently had an awakening! She is now a morning person because she has a beautiful new baby boy. Funny how that happens. ?
Even without her usual beauty sleep, she's fun to be around; no matter what stage of life she's in. She's a huge fan of Sweet Home Alabama, and one day dreams of Greece and believes Journey is the greatest band in the history of the world. Want to make Emily happy? Make her a steak and turn on HGTV! Because she's classic like that and loves decor and beautiful things.
Here's the message we want to send her on her birthday: ? "Don't stop believin'! Just hold on to that feeling!" ?
Because, Emily, it's your birthday, and we hope it's your very best one yet. Happy Birthday to Emily !!!
We have some new information about how we are planning to run our in-office rewards program starting in 2019!
We always want to make sure that the services and programs we are offering are relevant, useful, and ultimately fun! We think those are some of the main reasons people chose to come to Shoe Orthodontics! We want your time with us to be amazing.
Because of those goals, we've decided to phase out our Rewards Hub Programs.
Why Do This Now?
What our office has noticed over the past few years is that the participation and excitement in the Rewards Hub Program have come to a low point. Our goal is to be fun and exciting and it seems the consensus is that keeping track of rewards cards and points has lost its appeal.
What we realized was that collecting points and then redeeming them felt like a job to many of our patients. Our goal is to reward great compliance, not make patients track points on an awkward awards system.
So What's Next?
We're giving away bigger quarterly prizes! That's why we're starting with a family 4 pack of Hershey Park season passes! Bingo cards? Wait, what!? We are doing Bingo cards for rewards! You can get your squares by doing things like brushing your teeth before your appointment, wearing your Shoe Orthodontics swag to your appointment and being on time. Once you get Bingo (see cards for details), turn your card into any team member to be entered into our quarterly drawing for prizes!
What Do I Need To Know?
If you're a new patient, we will start phasing out Patient Reward Hub starting January 7, 2019. If you still have points you want to redeem, you'll still have the opportunity to cash out the points you have accumulated up until March 21, 2019 or donate your points to our Charity of the Month, Penn State Thon!
If you have any questions at all, please contact us at our office and we'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have!
