[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]A[/nectar_dropcap]t Shoe Orthodontics, we believe that there is no place in healthcare for pressure sales. This means that we want you to feel comfortable both in our office and with the orthodontic care that you’re receiving. That is why we think second opinions can be a good thing!
Why Second Opinions Matter
When you’re confident in the information and services that you provide, second opinions aren’t something to be afraid of. In fact, we think second opinions can be really valuable. Other than providing another perspective on your unique orthodontic needs, a second opinion can give you confidence and assurance in that treatment plan that you choose. Any doctor who pressures you into committing to your treatment plan on the spot probably doesn’t have your best interest in mind.
Reasons to Consider A Second Opinion
If you have reservations about your treatment, getting a second opinion could be the right decision for you or your child. Here are a few other reasons that people may seek out a second opinion in their orthodontic care.
It has been recommended that you have multiple teeth extracted before beginning orthodontic treatment
You have been told that veneers or dental implants would treat your condition better than orthodontics
You are unsure if the treatment recommended is necessary
You have concerns about your doctor
It has been recommended that you have jaw surgery
At Shoe Orthodontics, we support you if you want to get a second opinion on the treatment we’ve recommended. Similarly, we are happy to be a second opinion for you if you are receiving treatment elsewhere. We want every patient to feel fully confident and comfortable with their orthodontic care. Call us today to see if we can be a second opinion for you or your child’s orthodontic needs.
YWCA Hanover is one of our favorite charities to partner with.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y[/nectar_dropcap]WCA Hanover is one of our favorite nonprofits that we get to partner with, and for good reason. They do important work in the community and we are grateful to be a part of it anytime that we can. Their mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. They do this in several different ways.
Their facility provides a safe place for recreational and community events for teens and children. They host dozens of groups for meetings, sports practices, events, and celebrations. Their educational and advocacy programs range from support groups to community events including a teen leadership council, and an annual women’s conference. The YWCA Hanover Safe Home has provided services for victims of domestic violence, such as an abuse hotline, emergency, and transitional housing, therapy, legal advocacy, and much more. These vital resources protect children, women, and men from the tragic results of domestic abuse and violence, and educate the public on ways to end the cycle of violence.
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes
Most recently, we were proud to sponsor YWCA Hanover’s annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event. During the event, men are asked to walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes – LITERALLY! While the event was virtual this year, the cause is just as important – bringing awareness and sparking conversation about the long-lasting effects of sexual and domestic abuse in our community.
The impact of an event where men have to walk in women’s shoes is a public statement of listening, learning, allyship, and commitment. Most importantly, this event gets the community talking about sex and gender biases, gender identity, gender relations, and men's sexualized violence. All funds raised are used to help provide services for survivors of domestic violence.
We are proud to support this event and the continued work of YWCA Hanover. To find out how you can get involved, visit YWCA Hanover’s website here. To learn more about the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® campaign, click here.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]Y [/nectar_dropcap]ou might be having an issue with being stuck at home and keeping your kids entertained. We have an idea! Instead of asking your kids to do things they aren't always interested in and trying to plan out their whole day, ask them to teach YOU how to do they love. Here are a few ideas that will help you get started!
1.) How To play a musical instrument
You've been paying for lessons. They have been taking tons of classes. Now is the time to ask them to teach you what they have learned! This is great for so many reasons! You'll get to spend time together creating a memory, it will make your kid feel super awesome to teach you something, and you'll appreciate their talent a lot more because playing an instrument is hard work!
2.) How to play their favorite video game
We know kids LOVE to play video games. Normally, we fight tooth and nail to get them off of the things. How about, just this once, you ask your kid to teach you to play their favorite video game. Make it more fun and place bets on how many times you'll lose - loser has to do the dishes.
3.) How to do a dance
Tik Tok is huge right now. We're sure you've heard of it. If you really want to blow your kid away, ask them to teach you how to do their favorite Tik Tok dance. 10 points if you can keep up and 20 bonus points if you show us the video.
4.) How to do something artistic
There are a lot of very talented young artists. If your child is one of them, ask them to teach you how to do some awesome art using their favorite medium.
5.) How to do that super weird thing
Not all talents are conventional ones and that's awesome! Ask your kid how to do that weird eyebrow dance thing, talk backwards, solving a rubiks cube super fast, cup stacking...this list is endless, and your kid can definitely teach you something super cool and strange from it.
We hope you guys give some of these a shot. Enjoy making memories with your kids during this time where we are forced to slow down. Let them teach you a thing or two and you might be surprised at just how talented they really are!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]I[/nectar_dropcap]t’s not unusual to sometimes break a wire, and it always seems to happen when you expect it the least. Fortunately, most common orthodontic problems don't have to be an emergency because you can make minor fixes at home! As always, a little dental wax can help to ease discomfort, but sometimes you still find yourself with a bigger issue.
Here are our super simple tips to help you remove your ties and wire– using tools you can get in the beauty section of your local store. This should help you make necessary minor fixes if you are unable to make it in to the office.
There's a reason we warn you about eating crunchy or sticky foods– a single bite of the wrong food can cause a lot of trouble! It's much easier to stick with foods you know are braces-friendly than to have to make a repair.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]D[/nectar_dropcap]id you know that 26% of the households that receive food assistance have at least one member who has served or is currently serving in the military**? That means a quarter of the people experiencing food insecurity in our country are those who have sacrificed their time, talents, and health, and risked their lives in order to serve us. We think we owe it to these incredible men and women to support our community. That’s why we participate in the Military Share hosted by Roots for Boots! Roots for Boots is not only an incredible organization, but it is also so well-led, it’s hard to find the words to describe it. Christy Lucas has done an amazing job with Roots for Boots. She leads with vision, meticulous attention to detail, and compassion.
Meet Our Friends, John and Finn
Sometimes you find yourself in the right place at the right time. This was the case when Dr. Shoe had the honor of meeting a remarkable veteran named John at a recent Military Share. John is legally blind and was hoping to find a canine companion to share his life with. That's where Finn comes in — a lab mix that John just fell in love with.
Dr. Shoe wanted to make sure this dynamic duo had everything they needed to start their life together. So it was our privilege to provide a few services like a vet appointment and Service Dog Training through MCS Dog Training. We feel so humbled that we got to be a part of this journey and that we're able to give back this wonderful gentleman. We're so thankful for everything veterans have done (and continue to do) for our country.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]C[/nectar_dropcap]ommunity involvement and dental health education are two things that are SUPER important to us at Shoe Orthodontics. We make it a priority to be a truly valuable partner in the communities we serve. Since so many kids will eventually need some type of orthodontic care, we want to help them understand the ins and outs of treatment. With those two ideas in mind, we decided to partner with local schools to provide kids with a fun and educational experience for all ages!
Who Said School Presentations Have to Be Boring?!
Starting October 2019, you can schedule free, FUN presentation for your classroom. This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” kind of thing. We’ve created two different presentations: one for children in kindergarten and one for older kids who can get a little more hands-on.
K-Level Class Presentations
For kindergarten classes, we offer an easy-to-understand assembly program to teach kids about oral health. Kids are encouraged to participate and call out the answers with their classmates. Our goal is to help kids understand how to care for their teeth and gums from an early age — but we pack our presentations with dad jokes to keep them laughing.
Oral Healthcare for Grades 1-3
For older kids, we REALLY bring the fun. These presentations have a carnival-type feel — with 5-6 interactive education stations. Kids will play games and learn about orthodontic care from one of our team members. We even take a scan of a team member to show the kids what their teeth look like on a digital screen, and to show them how easy and painless the scans are.We also host these events at our office, so kiddos that are homeschooled or other small groups can learn about oral healthcare and orthodontics in a fun environment.Whatever presentation type you choose, every kid goes home with a goodie bag that we know they’ll love!
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]W[/nectar_dropcap]e’ve caught the Toy Story 4 bug, and we are bringing it to Halloween in the Park! This event is a fundraiser held annually at Codorus State Park, sponsored by the Friends of Codorus State Park. We will be there Friday and Saturday, the 25-26th, ready to hand out candy to all of the trick or treaters that come to visit us! .
The price of admission is just a $15 donation per car. Not only will Halloween in the Park benefit one of our favorite local treasures, it will ALSO be loaded with tons of fun stuff for the whole family!
A 1.5 mile hayride
90+ campsites decorated and ready hand out candy!
Hayrides run from 6 pm - 10 pm and trick or treating will be from 6 pm - 8:30 pm only! To make things even more fun, everyone who takes a picture at our campsite and tags us on Facebook or Instagram will be entered to win a $150 Visa gift card! Whoever gets the most likes on their photo is the winner!
Shoe Orthodontics understands that choosing the orthodontist who will take care of you or your children is a big decision.
[nectar_dropcap color="#91c14f"]T [/nectar_dropcap]here are a number of variables you will likely think through in choosing, but one of the biggest is whether or not you or someone you care for needs treatment. Would braces or Invisalign work for you?
We want to take some of the stress out of that decision by offering you a free, no-obligation, Virtual Consult with our office. In almost no time at all, you can complete the consultation directly from your phone — from anywhere! — and Dr. Shoe will look over your information and respond quickly with an assessment to let you know whether orthodontic treatment is right for you. If so, Dr. Shoe will also let you know what your best options are to get the smile you want.
This, of course, is the first step. The next step in your treatment is to come in for a thorough assessment, which includes pictures and x-rays for a highly specific and individual treatment plan. But it is our hope that the Virtual Consult will alleviate your initial concerns and fears and give you the information you need to take the next steps toward a beautiful smile.
In addition to your initial treatment assessment, we'll also send you information about the second most scary part of orthodontic treatment: paying for it. We want to make sure you get the care you need. And we know that providing the financing information upfront will give you a better, stress-free picture of what that will look like.
When you're ready to find out what your orthodontic options are, try a Virtual Consult today. We’ll help you decide what will work best for you!
